01: Visibility

The primary navigation should be visible and accessible across your website. Primary navigation — typically a menu or nav-bar — is the main set of links that will help users move between key sections of your website.

Your navigation should be:

• Consistently positioned on all pages: Navigation that moves or changes between pages can disorient and confuse users. Keep your navigation in the same location, and styled the same way across your entire website. Avoid adding, removing, or changing navigation links between different pages.
• Visible without scrolling: It can be beneficial to keep the navigation visible as a user scrolls down the page, via a sticky header. This allows the user to navigate to another area of the website from any point on a page.
• Visually distinct from other content areas: Make sure your navigation is prominent and easily identifiable. If it is too similar to the rest of your content, your user may not realize it’s there.

Review the primary pages of your website. Review the placement and style of your navigation across devices. Is navigation consistent across pages and accessible while scrolling? Does it remain visible when resizing your browser window or rotating your mobile device?
